Many Pet Parents think a medium-size dog is just the right fit for their home and family. Medium-size pups generally fall into the 30-to-50-pound range, encompassing a wide variety of breeds (and lots of mixed-breed pals). Here’s what to know about taking care of a “happy medium” pooch.

Find out what his breed needs.

There are lots of breeds to consider in the mid-size range, including Australian Shepherds, Bulldogs, Standard Schnauzers, Whippets, and many more — all of which have their own unique grooming, health, and exercise needs.

Once you’veallen in love with a breed, do your research! It will help give your future pup a paw up when it comes to keeping him as happy and healthy as possible.

Keep him from causing big trouble.

Medium-size dogs are just big enough to get into the kind of trouble that little dogs can’t, like snatching your food off the counter or raiding the kitchen trashcan! Use gates to keep your pal contained in areas of the house where he’s allowed — at least until he’s potty trained and (reliably) well behaved. Make sure these areas are free of small objects and other items your buddy shouldn’t be chewing on. You can make this area super comfy by including your furball’s cozy bed, fun toys, and food and water dishes.

Help him learn to mind his manners.

Manners are an important lesson for any dog to learn, but dogs in this size range can cause harm to smaller pets or people if they don’t learn how to greet strangers and listen to their Pet Parents. Spend time teaching your pup the basic commands: Sit, Stay, Come, and Heel. Don’t hesitate to enroll in obedience classes or work with a reputable trainer if you need a little help. Training with positive reinforcement helps create a wonderful bond between you and your new best friend.

He’ll thrive on good food and a daily workout.

Every dog needs to eat a nutritious and well-balanced diet to stay in tip-top shape. Some breeds may be more prone to obesity than others, so pay careful attention to how many treats your pup eats and what kind of food you feed him. Your veterinarian can make recommendations on what food to give your pal, how much, and on what schedule.

Many medium-size dogs are athletic and energetic, so make sure your buddy gets in some good exercise every day. Consult with your vet first to find out what kind of exercise he needs. A brisk daily walk and a run-around in the yard can be good for any pup who is able!

Make regular visits to your vet.

Your mid-size pup needs regular vet visits just like larger and smaller breed pups. Make an appointment with your vet as soon as you bring your pal home, and follow your vet’s guidance on a vaccination schedule and when to spay or neuter your pup.

Keep tabs on the health issues or conditions that may affect your pal’s breed, too. Medium-size pups can be prone to various health conditions, depending on their breed.

Maintaining regular vet visits as your dog ages will help you stay on top of any issues or concerns you may have with his well-being so you can enjoy lots of(mid-size)kisses, cuddles, and adventures!
