Mix the intelligence of a Poodle and the charm of a Golden Retriever and what do you get? The Goldendoodle, a sweet and playful pooch that brings both good looks and keen intelligence to the table. Here are a few important tips for any Pet Parent who is considering bringing a Goldendoodle into the family.
1. A Goldendoodle can be a small, medium, or large bundle of love.
Goldendoodles can weigh anywhere from 15 to more than 100 pounds. Since there are three different sizes of Poodles (toy, miniature, and standard) there is the chance that your pup could be any of those sizes when full grown. You can make a guess based off the size of your dog’s Poodle parent, but be prepared: Even a Goldendoodle with a small Poodle dad can grow up to be the large size of his Golden Retriever mom!
2. This breed needs a good workout. 30 minutes a day, minimum.
For an active family with love to spare, a Goldendoodle can be an ideal addition to the crew. They are natural athletes that love to get out and moving, so they make great hiking companions, running buddies, or swimming partners. Give your Goldendoodle plenty of daily exercise, and then enjoy chilling with him on the couch — he also likes a good cuddle at the end of the day!
3. Grooming needs may vary.
Your Goldendoodle will have one of three coat types: straight, wavy, or curly. Straight coats are smooth and fairly easy to maintain. Wavy and curly coats will need more regular bathing and grooming to keep your pup feeling fabulous. Ask your veterinarian what type of coat your pal has, and for tips on keeping your Goldendoodle well-groomed.
4. They love to learn (and make you happy).
Goldendoodles are super smart and eager to please. They make great service dogs, too. Train your pooch early and often — basic commands, tricks, and agility are perfect for giving your smarty-pants a way to work his brilliant brain. A Goldendoodle is also great with kids and (friendly) dogs and cats, so introduce him to lots of different people and pets to help develop his winning personality.
5. Watch his health (and visit your vet).
Goldendoodles are considered a hearty breed, but are susceptible to some of the health issues of Golden Retrievers and Poodles. Watch out for food allergies, ear infections, eye disorders, hip dysplasia, joint issues, and heart disease. Regular vet visits and a high-quality diet are the best way to stay on top of your pal’s health and happiness.
